As reported earlier, I am busy at work getting this first novel out into the world. Keep that in prayers! As with most of what we do, the book touches on areas that are not often explored in the Christian market.

I remember when we wrote our senior thesis film in college. The sheer forcefulness of it didn’t make sense, since we were hoping to break into the Christian market (it was a heavy film). Most people with their heads on straight will tell you to write a nice film that encourages fond memories of fathers or the joy of riding horses. That’s what the market wants!

But I have a hard time looking at myself in the mirror if I’m writing something I don’t believe in, or else, wouldn’t read myself. Nick has been gaining some opposition to his seminar on Mormonism and the difference between that and biblical Christianity. Over the past few weeks he’s been called a “legalist” multiple times (with more to come, I imagine). Perhaps God has put that need to separate the truth from the lies into us, to give people something they are not used to getting. We stir the pot so that people can think.

Now that I’m in the process of writing yet another novel, this one just as thought-provoking as the first, I am given to looking at our market in wonder. As we concluded in a podcast a few years ago, it really does take all kinds of creative people to reach the world. Though I’m not a sucker for dramas about Dad’s and sons coping with problem X now that person Y is gone, I know they play an important role. My hope is that the market will be open to something a little different.

Bringing up Bobby, in our minds, was very different, which was why we made it. But it was different in subtle ways. There was no evident father character. It was a comedy. The goth character in the movie did not stop dressing in goth clothing at the end of the film. Most importantly, we strove to share the gospel in everyday settings, rather than just from a pulpit. I’m still pleased with the film. Hopefully I can look back on these novels in the coming years and say the same about them. Hopefully, you’ll be along for the ride.

-Chris

So glad you asked! You may have noticed our hiatus from the podcast and website in the last few months. We’ve been super busy with normal life! A little secret about Christian films — they don’t pay too well, so we’ve been working second (and sometimes third!) jobs in order to make ends meet. That means that we have to balance work, managing our households, AND investing in our communities at the same time as we work on other projects. Burnout, anyone?

We’re not ashamed to admit that we are humans like everyone else and there are limitations on how much stress we can take. So we decided that we needed to cut back on the podcast, take a some time away from film production, and work on getting ourselves sane and seeking the Lord. Movie making is very difficult work, and can result in health problems. It also involves wearing a lot of masks in order to make people feel good about you and your productions. The Christian market wants to see perfect people, but there is no such a thing. We’ve never liked bending to fit the mold of the world. We prefer to challenge the mold and make people think (also not popular, and certainly no way to make a living). Until the church gets tired of hearing sermons with no content, and until believers begin to study the Bible in Bible studies instead of books about courage, we will continue to run into brick walls with every step. Not to mention there is a lot of temptation for a filmmaker/writer/speaker/mentor, etc to feel obligated to work work work in order to please the Lord. Though speakers at conferences tell us we need to strive strive strive, we’ve found little proof of that in the Word. That amounts to little more than trying to earn your salvation. So, let’s just say it — our market is full of masks. It’s full of “making of” videos that only show the happy stuff. It’s far from the truth, and those lies are eating at filmmakers even as they try to play the game. Sadly, there is little support for people who are in the public eye, but don’t agree with the game.

Filmmaking involves 16 hour days, constant stress, and weeks away from those you love. It means being picked apart for every minor issue, people constantly telling you that you should invest your life savings though they themselves are not willing to chip in $16 for a DVD, and often alienating your friends and family. Like it or not, Christian films would be unnecessary if believers would simply get out and share the gospel and live life as a follower of Christ. If the church is on fire there is no need for passive forms of evangelism such as Christian filmmaking.

All that being said, we are still writing. Chris is currently editing an evangelistic novel that he wrote (any publishers out there?), his fourth book, and he likes the progress. Its nice to be able to write without worrying how you are going to film it! He’s working without a deadline so as to do his best and not burn out.If it gets published then we will let you know about it here at glowingnose.com. Nick continues to pursue working with media and is always coming up with new ideas. We expect good things out of Nick!

We appreciate your support of Glowing Nose. We rely entirely on your help in spreading the word about our films. If the Lord calls us back into action, we’ll let you know here. Please remember us in your prayers.

The classic sermon "Hell's Best Kept Secret" from Ray Comfort, presented with special thanks to Way of the Master. This sermon will challenge you to share the Lord with those around you and give some helpful hints and tips for evangelism. Why do Christians believe in evangelism? Is in necessary for us to share the Law of God when speaking about Him.

With permission from the Way of the Master, we are proud to put this classic sermon from Ray Comfort on the podcast feed. This sermon is one of the best I have ever heard, and certainly has been a big motivator in Chris’ life for sharing the Lord with those around us. It takes an important look at the reasons that the Law should be incorporated in our witnessing. We would love to hear from you and get your comments on this excellent podcast!

The normal Glowing Nose Podcast is a fun sort of Christian “This American Life” where we explore topics that interest us in a unique and challenging way. It’s part discussion, part teaching, and all fun. Give a listen to our archives!

We want to thank everyone at Way of the Master who allowed us to place this on the feed. Please be sure to write to us and let us know what you think about the program! This is a bit different than what we usually post, but we have been looking to share this message with you for a while.

In this episode of the Glowing Nose Podcast, Chris Staron talks straight from the heart about the fact that we're all damaged goods in some respect. But there is hope.

Have you ever had to admit that you were sick? I know that there are famous sports players who often will persist in finishing their game even though they are sick. Some of us try to hide the fact that we are somehow injured or wounded so as to appear stronger than what we really are. But the fact of the matter is that each and every last one of us is damaged goods. We have all fallen short of the glory of God.

The most common reaction we’ve had to making a statement like that is something along the lines of, “don’t judge me!” But I’m here to say that it is the Bible itself that condemns us. Jesus clearly said that we were all sinners – but we don’t have to stay that way. We don’t have to remain sinners in the eyes of a holy God. Instead, we can admit our sin, turn from it and follow after Jesus. But that take commitment. It’s not as easy as just praying a prayer (though that is a good first step). It means total surrender. God loves you too much to only want a part of you. He wants it all.

In this episode of the Glowing Nose Podcast, Chris Staron talks straight from the heart about the fact that we’re all damaged goods in some respect. But there is hope.

In the podcast Chris discusses the story of the Rich Young Ruler and some items that we might overlook under a normal read.

The Glowing Nose Podcast is a Christian comedy podcast brought to you by the movies “Bringing up Bobby” and “Between the Walls”. It is a free service, but please feel free to help out!

Every year thousands of children receive shoeboxes packed with shoes, toothpaste, notebooks, and other goodies packed by volunteers all around the world. These boxes are delivered to areas in very real need. Operation Christmas Child (a ministry of Samaritan’s Purse) is a worthwhile ministry that we wanted to take a few minutes to support.

In July of 2009, Chris and Nick worked at the Creation NE festival promoting Bringing up Bobby. Their neighboring table was for Operation Christmas Child, where they met Lejla Allison, a woman who received a shoebox as a child.

This ministry relies on the generosity of normal people like you and me. Would you consider spearheading this ministry in your local church? It means contacting the ministry and then hosting a drive at your church or organization where people donate shoeboxes filled with supplies that can then be given to kids around the world along with a gospel tract. More is available on their website.
