What are your hangups? Well, this episode Chris Staron explains some of his personal hangups when it comes to Christian films and how he confronted them on a recent trip to the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival.

Here’s the message of this podcast: different Christian films exist to help different needs within the body of Christ. Think about it! There are no catch-all films. Fireproof is great for married people or those who are dating, but not quite aimed at the youth market. The Widow’s Might works perfectly in the homeschool realm, but may not fare well for inner-city people. Saving God is great for the gang scene, but may be considered rough for small children by some conservative families. The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry works as an encouragement to older believers and pre-teens, but will not excite people who are looking for an action film like Pendragon. See what we’re getting at? All of these are good films. But each of them serves a purpose. Just as different body parts serve different functions, different movies have unique purposes. In our opinion, so long as it lifts up Christ in a godly way, we want to be there to support it.

What hang-ups do you have? Leave us a comment with your thoughts on the podcast or take the time to let us know how God is challenging you today!

Here are some links to films screened at the festival:

The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry: by veteran filmmaker Rich Christiano. This film is all heart and very sweet. It follows a group of young boys who are mentored by an older man. God willing, it will be in theaters this September. Keep an eye out for it! Your family will love it.

The Prodigal Trilogy: A seriously creative look at the prodigal son story from Luke 15. I can’t even describe it, but it is worth a screening. It would be a perfect introduction into a sermon or youth study of the story.

Pendragon: This project just goes to show you how much families can accomplish when they come together. If you like medieval stories and action films, this project is for you.

Fireproof: You’ve heard of this one, haven’t you? Of course you have! It is the story of a firefighter whose marriage is in jeopardy and how he relies on the Lord is his quest to win back his wife. Check it out on DVD this month.

The Widow’s Might: If you are a homeschooler with a desire for an affirming film, though a little light on the gospel, check out the winner of the festival. This musical journey was very popular with the audience.

Thanks for the encouragement! Just as a note, there has been a recent production of “The Pilgrim’s Progress” that you might want to check out before you get started on your own version. I had the opportunity to watch it recently and was really pleased with the production and how true it was to the spirit of the book. Check out the DVD at: http://www.pilgrimsprogressthemovie.com/

    I saw it at SAICFF…

My team has decided to move forward anyway, but I appreciate the heads up. Suffice it to say that ours will be different enough to make it worth our while (and our investors’ money)…at least we hope!

I think this is the best co-host you’ve had yet. Good work!
