Dennis is the comedic backbone of the movie. A washed-up drifter, Dennis enjoys philosophy and light home maintenance. He’s terrified of the shed, loves flannel and 80’s vests, and does not know the meaning of good hygiene.
The purpose of Dennis’ character in the film is two-fold. He’s a huge part of the comedy in the movie. However, there is also something very serious about him. Dennis represents the idea that is prevalent in our culture that it is okay to go from state to state, god to god, belief to belief, in order to run away from commitment. He is so afraid to commit to one belief that he’ll run away from his own family to escape being faced with the bigger questions. Dennis represents our need to commit to a relationship with Jesus, rather than go from idea to idea. It’s not enough to just say that we sometimes believe in God – He’s seeking a true commitment. Dennis will never be satisfied by his searches. Will you?
