Liz is a great model of what a godly young woman should be. She is slow to jump into a new dating relationship, patiently gives wise advice, and dresses modestly. Her strongest trait is that she is willing to stand firm, even when approached by a handsome young man who wants to date her.
There is a key verse put into practice here: Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? (2 Corinthians 6:14 NIV). Even though Bobby claims to be a believer in the first part of the movie, Liz sees pretty clearly that it is just an act. He has not owned it for himself. She does the responsible thing and gently challenges him to know the Lord.
The application is pretty obvious. God’s design for intimate relationships like dating is like being yoked. A yoke is a device that is placed over the heads of two animals that are working together to pull something. The image makes you think of tough labor. Nothing could be more counterproductive than one animal that is working hard and another that is not doing its share of the work. Or worse, the animals could be going in different directions! It is the same in a relationship – if the animals involved are not working together, not much can be accomplished. In the same way, if two people are not moving in the same direction, chaos ensues.
Our faith is supposed to be the most important aspect of our lives, even at the expense of everything else. That means that following Jesus should be our top priority. If something pulls us away from that, we should not follow.
Some people think that they can lead someone to Christ by dating them. However, this is not something that the Bible advocates. It’s great to lead someone to Christ in friendship. Why complicate matters by introducing dating into the situation? Besides, many people put on masks in the early stages of a relationship and may be pretending to be someone that they are not.
The challenge is to be more like Liz: look at a person’s heart before you date them. Is Jesus their top priority? Do their actions back up what they say? Being strong early on can save you a lot of heartache and make you a much stronger person.
